Participate in politics and embrace leadership - Namayanja tells Christians

Sunday 13th July 2025

The NRM Deputy Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Namayanja Rose Nsereko inspired worshippers at Mt. Olives SDA Church in Naalya with a powerful sermon, urging Christians, especially the youth, to embrace leadership and political participation without compromising their faith. The special Sabbath service, coordinated by Mr. Vincent Zirimwabagabo, the first elder of Mt. Olives SDA Church, centred on the theme “Christianity and Politics,” challenging believers to shine Christ’s light in every sphere of society, including civic engagement.

“There is no contradiction between being a Christian and a politician,” Namayanja asserted. “In fact, faith should guide leadership. My beliefs shape every decision I make, ensuring that my service remains just, ethical, and God-fearing.” She emphasised that Christians must reflect godly values in governance, adding, “Our conduct must testify to our faith. When leaders act with integrity, they dismantle corruption, theft, and violence. True faith transforms societies.”

Dismissing the notion that politics is a “dirty game,” she issued a bold challenge: “This label sticks only when good people stay away. I call on young believers to rise, especially those in the NRM register. If you’re rooted in Christ, you won’t be corrupted. You can campaign with peace, serve with honesty, and lead without moral compromise.” She specifically urged NRM-registered youth to participate actively and peacefully in the forthcoming party primaries, reminding them, “Discipline and maturity will distinguish you as Christ-centred leaders.”

Addressing concerns about politicians engaging churches for votes, she clarified, “Churches are community hubs where leaders naturally connect with people. The key is delivering messages of unity, not division. A stable nation benefits the Church as well.”

Elder Vincent Zirimwabagabo, who facilitated the dialogue, shared the church’s vision behind the invitation: “Today was a special Sabbath. We wanted Rt. Hon. Namayanja to speak to our youth, 80% of our congregation is under 40, to show that you can be both a politician and a Christian. She reminded us that we are the light, and this light must shine wherever we serve, whether in politics, business, or civil service.” He praised her message for aligning with the church’s mission to raise Christ-centred leaders, adding, “We thank her for the gospel today. May God bless her service. This is my prayer for her each day.”

Namayanja closed with a biblical charge from Matthew 22:21: “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” Her message resonated deeply, reinforcing Mt. Olives SDA Church’s belief that faith and public service are not just compatible but essential for national transformation.
