On Friday 2nd, October 2020, The National Resistance Movement (NRM) submitted lists of signatures of registered voters to the Independent Electoral Commission supporting the nomination of H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as the Party Presidential Flag bearer 2020/2021. The Secretary General Rt. Hon. Justine Kasule Lumumba was represented by her Deputy, Hon Richard Todwong and the Deputy National Treasurer Hon Jacqueline Kyatuheire. The Party submitted over Five million signatures from registered voters across the 142 districts of Uganda.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank all Ugandans who overwhelmingly accepted to pen their Signatures and made this process a success.” the Secretary General Rt. Hon. Justine Kasule Lumumba remarked.
On SIG Elections, the Secretary General informed the media that the NRM registered massive wins at Sub County Elections as Follows;
Elderly: - NRM won 9050 out of 10310 positions representing 95%
PWD: NRM won 9002 out 10310 Positions representing 95%
Youth: NRM won 15549 out of 18558 Positions representing 88.3%
The Secretary General thanked Ugandans for continuing to overwhelmingly support and vote NRM at all levels, a thing she said shows and highlights the Massive grassroot support the party enjoys among the population under the Visionary leadership of HE President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
On the issue of age limit, the SG said that all members who had won primaries and hadn’t not been nominated because of age limit can now be nominated because the issue was settled by Parliament.
She noted that the Government agreed and amended the Local Government Act that had set an age limit for all aspiring Candidates for the positions of Chairperson at Sub-county, Municipality, City Division, Town Council and Municipal division.
"On the Issue regarding the age restriction for the above positions, government has agreed to amend the local government Act that had set an age Limit.’’ She said
“Starting with this ongoing Electoral Process, any aspiring Candidate for the Position of Chairperson at Local Government level must only be 18 and above. Now that these restrictions no longer exist, I call upon all individuals who qualify to go ahead with their plans.” She noted
Prior to this amendment, any aspiring candidate had to be 30 Years and above but not exceeding 75 Years. His Excellency the President has agreed and signed off the amendment that abolishes the above Restrictions.
The Secretary General also noted that Primaries for Parliamentary SIGs will be held on 10th October 2020 and called upon all Members to maintain Peace while participating in these elections. She furthermore called upon the RDCs to ensure that the SOPs are observed and make sure there are washing facilities at every polling station
Counsel Enock Barata, the head of the NRM Elections tribunal told the media that in the Quick over view in regards to petition, for the last seven days they received over 516 petitions and so far, we have heard 453 petitions from the Greater Masaka, Rwenzori, West Nile, Busoga, Kigezi, Lango, greater Mukono, Ankole greater Luweero and West Nile. He then noted that today Sunday 4th October 2020, the tribunal will handle over 45 petitions from Kampala, Wakiso and Elgon Region. Tomorrow Monday 5th October 2020 the Tribunal will handle Karamoja and Teso Region.
“Our aim is to give our decisions between 24 hrs. By Wednesday, we shall be done.’’
Director in charge of Legal affairs -NRM, Counsel Oscar Kihika - We have received petitions in the last 7 days. The process of receiving the Petitions was smooth and we have a deadline of Monday 5th October 2020 when to offload all the cases. Apparently, we take decisions after Hearings from both sides and these decisions are made within 24 hours
